Maybe (like The Pretty Things) The Hollies will reunite the classic 1966-1968 line-up for their farewell concert...

... Yes, I have met quite a few celebrities, but even those where I've been in their homes (P.J. Proby) or hotel rooms (Jerry Lee Lewis), I can honestly say that the actual concerts meant far more to me. Hi Peter, Like you I worked at the local venue (for 15 years) in Haarlem [NL]. I was stage manager/stage sound engineer and have worked with a lot of celebrities, among them Steve Marriott, Bo Diddley, Willie DeVille and Peter Green. I also toured with the Pretty Things on two Dutch tours in 1987 and 1989 as their backline roadie/driver. There is a picture of me with Phil May in a dressing room in Eindhoven. Phil and Dick Taylor were lovely to work for. Last time I met Phil was in 1995, at the funeral of their Dutch tourmanager and my friend Rob Acda, who had recruited me for those tours... I was shocked when I heard of Phil's passing...

What does everyone think about when they might call it a day? Maybe a last USA tour ,then UK, then quit may have been on their minds at the time? I feel they may not go to the States now, and I think any thoughts of trying to make a round 2023 retirement may be more than a little ambitious 😬 I reckon when Bobby reaches 80. That would be my guess and that's only just under a year and a half away. According to Terry he already is 80?!!

But his Wiki page also says he and Maureen were in a long relationship rather than married, so I'd take that with a grain of salt.

Anyways, let's hope Terry doesn't watch this little film I just saw on Twitter.

According to Bobby in his book, chapter 1, page 2, he was born the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, so on Nov. 8, 1941. EDIT: I meant December of course... stupid mistake. I apologise...

the attack on Pearl Harbor took place on sunday 7 December 1941 not November
Bobby's birthday of 8 December 1941 is also the same date of Graham Nash's final sixties Hollies concert performance in 1968 and sadly also the date of John Lennon's death in 1980

@sallynaden's thinking 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother' by #TheHollies 🎸 It could get the @bbcphilharmonic treatment
Oh God, NO. The world does NOT need an album of old faves with senseless overdubs by the RPO or any orchestra... the worrying thing is, I wouldn't be at all surprised if The Hollies jump on that bandwagon.
Incidentally with talk of The Pretty Things, one of their best albums was 1980's "Cross Talk" where to the surprise of many, they tackled New Wave head on and turned in a very credible effort. It still holds up well, sounds fresh and not the sound of a band resting on their laurels or jumping on a bandwagon. Just think... what did The Hollies churn out that year? If only they had dared to go in a New Wave styled direction, do more rockier stuff instead of the funereal turgid ballads and oversynthed things they ended up doing.

Sounds like she was courting the present lineup if she mentioned Howarth rather than Clarke. So I wouldn't be surprised either.

I love "Cross Talk"... when they were touring The Netherlands in both 1987 and 1989 a lot of that album made up their set list. Re: The Hollies in 1980, wasn't that the year they released "Buddy Holly", an album that I still like?

Here's a song from 'Cross Talk' (the only footage I've seen of Phil May playing guitar):

Christmas is coming up and a whole year of touring revenue has been lost

The general opinion I seem to get on those RPO albums are they are pretty mediocre or below average at best. I imagine the orchestral treatment is somewhat decent with the Elvis, Buddy and Roy Orbison material (I haven't listened to any of those albums, but maybe one of you who has can prove me right of wrong.) But yes, the possibility of The Hollies falling into that trap is not unlikely and I'd rather not have that. Take for example The Beach Boys one from a few years back which I did look out for and where you have a quite crazily diverse range of songs going on - adding the orchestra to slower songs like "Don't Worry Baby" and "Disney Girls" was done beautifully and well, but then you have the more up-tempo songs like " Fun, Fun, Fun" and "Good Vibrations" where they just went completely over the top with their arrangements and even tampered a little with the original vocal tracks on some which just ruined the songs imo. I shudder at the thought of "LCW" or "Carrie Anne" having to go through that! Maybe if they dug around and picked a non-hit or two like "Wings" or "Love Is The Thing", they could do a nice job on those, but that's about it.

You know it's going to be "Jennifer Eccles" and "Bus Stop". The Hollies didn't release albums, silly boy!

An orchestra has its place (and I've seen a few acts with one on specific tours), but what was done to some Beach Boys and Roy Orbison tracks was nothing short of sacrilege. And I'm no fan of the former!

On the basis that the Hollies were happy to replace Bobby with a drum machine on parts of ‘Staying Power’ to “save time and money”, I can’t even begin to comprehend them footing the bill for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to have a day at Abbey Road with their session tapes!

I've got the Orbison cds and I'll admit that I like them but his best songs in my opinion already had strings on anyway. If it was done to the Hollies, how could you improve the arrangements on air and heavy? It feels wrong to add strings to the poppy hits

Here's a song from 'Cross Talk' (the only footage I've seen of Phil May playing guitar): Thanks for this clip, Peter... I see Dick breaking a string shortly before his guitar solo,... this happened quite often when I worked for them... I remember at one concert, being summoned by Dick to hand him his spare guitar mid-song because he broke the B-string,... While he plugged in his spare guitar (and subsequently played a brilliant solo) I went to the side of the podium to replace the broken string and handed his favourite guitar back to him before the next song started..... I don't remember Phil playing any gitar during those two tours...

Gonna put this on my CV. So he blocked you?... what did you do?... I liked the "wrong" tweets by someone else he ended up blocking. *whistles* EDIT: Although I still wonder whether I'm the "bozo" who's a fan of "the druggies" he was referring to when I tweeted about his badly worded tweet regarding going to Disneyworld "asap" and started singing "Riding along in a carousel, trying to get Covid-19"... And then I tweeted something about alcohol being a drug too... *shrug*
