As we know, Hollies album covers in the UK have sometimes been a bit... questionable. So I was wondering, what are your favourite covers from elsewhere in the world for the same album?
For me, I prefer the German version of 'Butterfly' with the rear photo from the UK sleeve on the front of it and the butterfly design on top. I also prefer the mega rare first German version of 'Move On' with the photo of the guys that was included as an insert on the UK 'Confessions of the Mind' album. The first German version also uses the same font as the UK COTM cover - does anyone know why the German version was changed quickly to the cover with them in the car and all the arrows on the cover?

Evolution wasn't questionable, imo. It was iconic. There's even an article in July's Shindig Magazine about it. North America got a crap version, I think. I guess North America is pretty much out of this discussion because the albums weren't even the same until Distant Light, and I'm clueless about the rest of the world. Canada was even worse than the US. But enough crabbing. Athough you do want to compare identical albums, I have to say I do like the cover for "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" better than "Hollies Sing Hollies". Because I really really really hate the cover of "Hollies Sing Hollies!"

I think I prefer the cover for the USA 'Stop! Stop! Stop!' to 'For Certain Because' (same track listing, different title):

I like the He Ain't Heavy cover better as well, but don't quite understand it. Isn't it a silhouette of Allan's head smudged across the sky (words I never thought I'd be saying)? 😂

I must be the odd one out because I think the HAHHMB cover is right up there with the 'Moving Finger' cover as being just about the worst of the bunch. Sure, the cover for Hollies Sing Hollies is awkward, kitsch and they couldn't even get a shot of the group together for the centre fold, but it's still not as bad as two covers with weird themes that don't fit the music content at all!
I agree that 'Evolution' is iconic, probably their best album cover actually. I'm sad that only one alternative shot of it has ever leaked out. There's one with Graham stood in the middle rather than Tony.
Also I like the American 'Stop! Stop! Stop!' cover, though the UK version I guess was trying to be artistic with the gatefold sleeve and those marvellous shots of the boys. The Canadian Capitol version is basically the UK cover without the gatefold and it's been retitled 'Stop! Stop! Stop!', which is a lot less confusing than 'For Certain Because...'

Also, I was just looking at the Discogs entry for the alternative ‘Move On’ cover and I realised why it was withdrawn - Allan has his hands down his pants! I’ve never noticed that before! It’s also on the insert for the UK version of the album, ‘Confessions Of The Mind’. The British 8-track version also contains the photo for the album cover, so I’m guessing the all-black cover was a late edition.

The cover for Evolution was indeed iconic. But I also love the covers of Distant Light and Romany. Move On, Moving Finger and HAHHMB I'd rather sooner forget as well as the Stop! Stop! Stop! covers... I like the cover of For Certain Because a lot more and I also like the cover for Would you Believe.... The North American albums are alien to me both for their covers as for the hacking up of the playlists... The early Beatles albums were destroyed in the same tasteless fashion...
PS I used to own the German version of Butterfly too. It was stolen from me in the early 80s when my student room was burgled (I again prefer the UK cover though), correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Elevated Observations twice as long on that version?

I too don't like any of the North American albums, with the exception of some of the Capitol 6000 pressings. They have a re-working of 'In The Hollies Style' with the best tracks from the album (IMO) plus the three big singles 'I'm Alive', 'We're Through' and 'Yes I Will', which makes for a good listen. Their version of 'Stay With The Hollies' also has 'Just One Look' and 'Here I Go Again' worked into the tracklist. The 'Bus Stop' LP is also a pretty good re-working of 'Would You Believe' plus 'Bus Stop' and 'Don't Run And Hide', which was just about their best A/B-side single, IMO. Yes the German Hansa version has a "double" version of 'Elevated Observations', the second run through doesn't speed up at the end. 'Butterfly' seems to have heralded more alternative mixes than any other Hollies album. I think they sent out "safe" less psychedelic mixes of a lot of the songs in case the record company didn't like the direction in which the Hollies were heading. The American 'Dear Eloise/King Midas In Reverse' LP uses the most alternative mixes that are missing sound effects. The German Hansa pressing actually has a different mix of 'Dear Eloise', most people only pick up on the end edit, which plays the full intro again like the mono mix does, but in fact, it's a completely different stereo mix to the UK stereo mix. One has central panned vocals on the middle section and the other splits them wide over both channels.

I admit I stopped listening to it once I had Butterfly...
