I read online that The Air That I Breathe was released this week 50 years ago. The boxset says January 1974 so it must be there or thereabouts.
It seems not long ago we were talking about the 50th anniversary of their first hit. Now it's the 50th of their last hit. Technically they did have other hits but this marks the end of their 11 year run as hitmakers. Not a bad run, 11 years straight on the charts!
It's a magnificent record in my opinion. I can definitely see Allan's point when he said it, "was the ultimate record. Everything afterwards was 5 per cent below that."

No exactly their last hit, at least not in this country. “Stop in the Name of Love” in 1983 marked The Hollies’ welcome return to US radio. It was thrilling to hear them again gracing the airwaves. “Stop….” made The Top 40 in the US and Canada. As fate would have it, the UK missed out on yet ANOTHER Hollies hit, and ANOTHER tour to support it. Hard luck.

Their final hit in the UK was "The Woman I Love", which got to No. 42 in 1993.

I don't know about the other states.

And the US missed out on: Searching Stay We're Through Yes, I Will I'm Alive If I Needed Someone Listen To Me I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top (well, it was #82 but) Gasoline Alley Bred Hey Willy The Baby Curly Billy So I don't quite get this "another" you speak of. Unless you only value Hollies singles that were American hits.

It was the first Hollies song I ever heard, and the first record I ever bought that wasn’t a Beatles record. “Concrete and Clay” by The Unit Four Plus Two I also bought. “Hey Willy” was on FM radio in Los Angeles. It’s too bad the band didn’t know that. Had they known they might have included it in their set in 1972. I would have LOVED to have heard Rickfors sing that. His voice would have been perfect for it. As with other rockers “Out on the Road” and “TransAtlantic Westbound Jet”, Rickfors would have sung it better than Clarke did. Their set could have used another rocker. As for not valuing hits outside of one’s own country, it’s you isolated Britishers who don’t. Get it right.

We're talking national charts, not your little hometown. In Canada (because I'm not British), it reached 11 on RPM. "Concrete and Clay" reached 28 on Billboard, so not a good comparison as it was a hit on both sides of the pond. Meanwhile in Canada (because I'm not British), it was a #1 hit. The UK list is longer than the US one. Your love of Rickfors over Clarke is irrelevant. Back to ignoring your narky instigations again. Buh-bye.
