Hi all. I wonder who you would have chosen as Clarkes replacement in 78/79? I think Gary Brooker was considered at the time. Luckily alan returned and had 20 or so more years.

I doubt very much Gary Brooker would have joined permanently... he was working on his post Procol solo career and being more bluesy based, doubt he would have been at all comfortable doing the older pop hits. I guess the other two renowned Allan replacements John Miles and Carl Wayne would have been better choices. Miles' solo career was on the downturn by then and Carl wasn't doing anything major so the timing would have been ideal for them to join.

Both Alan Merrill (Arrows) and Dean Ford (Marmalade) were reportedly considered by the band in 1978, and Strawbs' frontman Dave Cousins was actually offered the position, prior to Allan's sudden return... Dave recalled in his autobiography (and in a recent online conversation with myself): "I was the lead singer for a week although I only met up with Tony and manager, whose name I forget. Then Allan Clarke came back, Tony wanted both of us, but it was obvious to me that it wouldn’t work. Tony wanted me to help the Hollies break the US market. They had a couple of [recent] hit singles. There were no rehearsals. I had a call from Ron Richards to say I was in the studio next week. Later that week Tony phoned to say Allan was back. I did buy a Hollies album to sing along to. The keys were high for me but I reckoned I could get up there with practice." Both Carl Wayne and John Miles were initially mooted for Allan's replacement during the late '90s (although Carl had also been a consideration for the post back in '72)
