Channel 5 (in the UK) is currently showing a chart countdown of the biggest hits of the 1970s, year by year.
Friday's episode covered the year 1974 and I was eagerly waiting to see where The Hollies featured on the chart with The Air That I Breathe.
The answer was a creditable number 14.
They showed the clip we've all seen before - the one through the 'fish-eye' lens at the start.
There were also contributions from various people who all gave glowing reviews. David Hamilton said The Hollies did it beautifully. Phil Wright of Paper Lace (whose song Billy Don't Be A Hero kept The Hollies off the Number One spot) said it had a great melody line and great lyrics. Tina Charles said it gives her goosebumps. Barry Blue said it was one of those songs that gets you in the heart.
Perhaps the best comment came from Magpie presenter Tommy Boyd who said its success is 'largely down to the incredible voice and power of the lead singer, Allan Clarke'.
Incidentally, Mud's Tiger Feet was at Number One.

Channel 5? Constant spam TV in my books so have zero credibility for me. Nothing to do with what station it was on. Mud did have the best-selling single of 1974. One of the only countries where our Canadian contribution to dreck, "Seasons In The Sun" wasn't the top song. Let's face it, everyone's taste was in their bum back then. Present company excluded, of course!
