Hello all,
New to the forum as a member, and so this is my first post.
I've only recently begun my Hollies journey, and so far own only the two volumes of Original Album Series, the 1973 US Greatest Hits - all on CD - plus a nice clean copy of What Goes Around (what can I say, I'm an 80's kid) on vinyl. I'm trying to decide next steps in my collection, and so ordered a couple of days ago the 30th Anniversary CD set for the stereo remixes. Beyond this, I'm not sure where to head next. Any recommendations?
I like the OAS sets, but find I'd really like to have the stereo mixes of the first five albums as well as the mono for Evolution and Butterfly. When I've looked around for copies of the late 90's mono/stereo CD remasters these appear to be somewhat easy to find on Discogs, though not necessarily in the best of shape. What are the alternatives here? Going for the original stereo vinyl? Is this practical/ cost-effective?
Also, as I tend to rip my CD's into iTunes I'm looking around for decent resolution, period-accurate scans of the first five UK lp's From Stay through For Certain Because. This has also proven difficult, so open to suggestions here as well. How do you all handle this? Personally, I'd love to have more high-res downloads as well...
Thanks,
John

If you are looking for any vinyl copies of the albums a good idea is also to check out any charity shops in your area
I have found 'Stay With The Hollies' in mono, 'In The Hollies Style' mono and 'Butterfly' mono all on original Parlophone 'yellow label' in decent condition in recent years - charity shops often get in LPs due to house clearances or if family members are getting rid of a deceased family members old record collection etc (sad but it comes to us all in time) - I'm sure any such old Hollies fan would wish their LP go to a new Hollies fan
Look out for the budget stereo LPs too - Reflection (Hollies 1965 on Regal Starline from 1969), Stop Stop Stop (For Certain Because 1966 stereo on Starline from 1971) while MFP has 'The Hollies' (Stereo Evolution 1967 from 1972) and 'I Can't Let Go' (Stereo Would You Believe 1966 - tho' released in spring 1967 - from 1978 I think)
'The Vintage Hollies' on World records from 1967 is the stereo version of the second album 'In The Hollies Style' from 1964
MFP also has the 'Long Cool Woman' 12 track compilation (six songs Nash era, Six songs Sylvester era) with a memorable cover photo on front and back !!
and MFP issued 'The Hollies' from 1988 which at the time had three unreleased tracks on it
Hollies Greatest still turns up in both mono and stereo - sixties 'yellow/black' and seventies 'silver box' Parlophone label designs
a mono Hollies Greatest on silver box Parlophone label will date from 1970
'Hollies Greatest vol 2' still appears from time to time too
'History of The Hollies' on EMI label from 1975 still turns up
20 Golden Greats - appears on a couple of EMI Label designs - Stop Stop Stop is in mono while some copies feature the 1965 hit mono enhanced for stereo 'Yes I Will' and some have the stereo alternate faster version - you only know which when you play it !
'Not The Hits Again' and 'Rarities' are strong compilations worth looking out for besides Parlophones 'Best of Hollies EPs' and 'The Other Side of The Hollies' (a B sides compilation covering 1963 to 1971)
'All The Hits And More' is a strong 1988 compilation 2LP plus CD set (with a few extra tracks on CD)
'Butterfly' (stereo) and 'Confessions of The Mind' were both re-issued in the late seventies in revised sleeves on Parlophone while 'Evolution' (stereo) was re-issued in it's original sleeve design
Later BGO Records re-issued the original LPs on both vinyl and CD up to 'For Certain Because...' (without checking I think they stopped there but maybe not) so there are those to seek out too if you are interested Polydor era: Hollies Live Hits still turns up quite often too but in general both the later Parlophone and Polydor LPs are a little less frequent now to a decade or so back
'The Air That I Breathe' was a often overlooked budget Polydor compilation LP from around 1980
Besides charity shops and junk shops check out car boot sales and jumble sales etc too - often old records are given away to those and are sometimes quite cheap !
Good luck with your record hunting if you decide to go for a vinyl collection besides the CDs

When I've looked around for copies of the late 90's mono/stereo CD remasters these appear to be somewhat easy to find on Discogs, though not necessarily in the best of shape. What are the alternatives here? They’re getting fairly pricey on Discogs now, but around 2014 all their early UK albums from the debut thru Evolution were issued in Japan with both mono and stereo + associated bonus tracks on a single disc for each. Not sure which mixes tho. That’s what I have for everything thru Romany actually. But I bought them at release and like I said they’re out of print now. But an option if you want to investigate further. Mark

Really good feedback all. Thanks much. I’ve got a lot to chew on here.
