When "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" had its BBC radio airing when new, Allan Clarke messes up the lyric. He sings "gladness OF love for one another". Fast forward to the 1976 Supersonic appearance. This time Clarke sings "sadness" instead of "gladness". If he really felt the lyric of the song, he would have gotten it right, IMHO. On the other hand, Mikael Rickfors sang the song flawlessly and with great emotion in 1972. Absolute perfection. Why did Clarke screw up so badly on more than one occasion?

Sometimes you feel the song more than others. Sometimes other things that are happening in your life distract you from the task at hand.
Allan liked to change a word here and there in other songs to keep them fresh. Imagine how monotonous it would be to sing the same song 100 times.
It isn't just the folks from Britain who support Allan. He has fans around the world because he is THE GREATEST rock/pop singer EVER!
Is this all you are complaining about? One word in one performance? Seems petty.

I have to agree with Moorlock. Clarke was going thru the motions where as Rickfors was pumping life into the song.

Proof that Allan had excellent improvisational skills instead of just performing songs karaoke style like other would-be Hollies lead singers.

Allan was known to mix up lyrics live. The most memorable one for me is on a live recording of "Don't Let Me Down" he jumps right in with the FOURTH verse first! And it was a song that he wrote! Either way, I'd have been bored singing "He Ain't Heavy" every night by 1975. How they've kept it up for nearly 50 years, I don't know!
