Just recently on a face book post by Knut Skyberg, of the label for the Canadian Epic Records 45 of Slow Down 5-11025. Interestingly it credited the songwriters as J Gluck, H Wiener, C Crane. The B side of that single Won’t We Feel Good also credits the same songwriters.
There was some discussion as to the correct writers of the song as the UK LP Romany has the song writers for both tracks as M Leslie, B Day. That being Mike Leslie and Billy Day.
I did some investigation to try and establish who was the correct writers of this track although I did believe it to be Day/Leslie.
It is interesting what a little research will do to help with some of these issues. I used 45cat and the US Library Of Congress books to work through it.
In the LOC Slow Down is there with the credits of John Gluck and Harriet Kane. It was copy write in June 1966 to Frost Music Corp. This is not the same track as the Hollies version. Interestingly Gluck wrote It’s My Party (Lesley Gore) & Mecca (Gene Pitney) and many other songs sometimes with these writers and also with other collaborators.
There are titles credited to John Gluck, Herb Wiener and Harriet Kane. Maybe C Crane is a pseudonym for Harriett Kane but who knows. Their songwriting credits go back to the middle 50's and John Gluck born 1925 died in 2000.
The US/Canadian Epic LP Romany credits these 3 as the writers . I don’t have later pressings of those 2 albums so I am unable to confirm if the credits were changed at some time.
The 45 most certainly has a writing credit change with Day/Leslie being credited (See the entry on 45cat) for those songs. It has both version displayed.
Day and Leslie are English song writers. Their songs have been associated with The Brotherhood Of Man, Alan Price, Olivia Newton John, Mama Cass, The Miracles and others. Several of them covered Where Are You Going To My Love.
They were in a band called Paradise Hammer. Day was on keyboards and Leslie on bass. They released a couple of singles, You Got Me In / She is Love in 1970 & 1 + 1 = 2 / To Live.
Mike Leslie may have had a couple of solo singles issued on Pye but the information on him is very sketchy.
