We were just discussing on Facebook about the German Odeon "Greatest Hits" LP which contains the first ever stereo mix of "You Know He Did" which has apparently never been issued since on CD. It got me thinking, could we collectively compile a list of alternative/first mixes and where to find them? Bonus points too if you can point out why the mix is different. Try and include the catalogue numbers from Discogs if you can, it might help some of the forum followers add to their collections. I'll start the ball rolling with a few...
1966:
"Beat Group!" - Imperial (America) LP 12312
"A Taste Of Honey" - the first ever stereo mix/issue of the 1966 version of the track
"The Hollies" - Regal (UK Export only) SREG 2024 - actually the UK version of the American "Bus Stop" LP, with proper stereo mixes
"Bus Stop" - the first ever stereo mix
"Don't Run And Hide" - first ever stereo mix, hasn't been re-issued on CD as far as I'm aware.
1967:
"Butterfly" - Hansa (Germany) 77 133 IT
"Dear Eloise" - slightly narrower stereo mix, the end slows down to a complete fade before the intro starts again from scratch rather than cutting straight into Nash's first verse. About 10secs longer than other versions.
"Elevated Observations?" - same as the UK mix, but at the end it starts again. This second version is missing the wind effects at the end and doesn't speed up at the end of the track.
"Dear Eloise/King Midas In Reverse" - Epic (America/Canada) BN 26344
"Wishyouawish" - has a clean intro, no sound effects of running water or birdsong.
"Charlie And Fred" - Allan's vocal is acapella at the start, there's no horse effect. It stays mono until the backing comes in, whereas the original mix pans from left to right with the walking horse effect.
"Postcard" - clean intro with no sea effect, plays significantly faster than the original mix.
"Maker" - has a few seconds chopped off the start of the song, though it appears to missing one of the sitar overdubs throughout the track.
1968:
"Hollies' Greatest" - Parlophone (UK) PCS 7057
"Yes I Will" - accidental issue of the alternative version in stereo only.
"Hollies Greatest Hits" - Hansa (Germany) 78 575 IT
"Carrie Anne" - an alternative mix that makes the instrumental track pseudo stereo with mono vocals to create a more balanced mix.
"Do The Best You Can" - the first ever stereo mix with banjo in the left channel, does not appear on CD.
"All The World Is Love" - the first ever stereo mix, didn't reappear on CD until 2011's "Clarke Hicks & Nash Years" set.
"Everything Is Sunshine" - the first ever stereo mix, does appear on CD.
"Signs That Will Never Change" - the first ever stereo mix, does appear on CD.
"Like Every Time Before" - the first ever stereo mix, missing the lead guitar overdubs which appear in mono only.
"Blowin' In The Wind" - the first issue of the stereo mix of the Nash version. Has been used on CDs ever since.
1972:
"Romany" - Parlophone (Malaysia) SLPEA 2001A
"Magic Woman Touch" - for some unexplained reason, the acoustic version appears first here. Not released on CD until the official EMI reissue in 2007.
1978:
"20 Golden Greats" - Parlophone (Australia) SCA.260875
"I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top" - unissued cleaner mix minus the out of sync guitar, not issued on CD until 2003's "Long Road Home" boxset.
1985:
"Hollies" - Music For Pleasure (UK) LP: 41 5727 1
"Poison Ivy" - first release. In stereo.
"Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" - first release. In stereo.
"Little Bitty Pretty One" - first release. In stereo.
1987:
"The Hit List" - J&B Records (Australia) JB292
"Poison Ivy" - accidental release of the alternative mix with the bad note bass ending
