while of course it doesn't matter a bit in everyday life if you lose your hair I think in the entertainment industry it does - and particularly where as in The Hollies case you have an older veteran band trying to still appear contemporary and relevant to the public, and hopefully pick up new younger fans - to many of whom the visual image is paramount
Bobby Darin ALWAYS wore a hairpiece...in his private life Waldo never did !
many actors likewise - in 'Bonanza' only Mike Landon of the Cartwrights did not wear a hairpiece
Bobby got away with it more not being in the front line of the band, Bernie was a bit more obvious and by 1981 he was looking an unlikely rock or pop star !
Allan's face suddenly looked tired and worn from 1976 onwards - 'Write On' innersleeve pic was the first where I really noticed it, while his sullen rarely smiling look didn't help
maybe it's significant that Clarkey's boyish smile seemed to depart along with Graham Nash - when he did smile later he looked far younger but Hollies photographer Rob Haywood told me getting Allan Clarke to smile was very difficult indeed...!
so a combination of his lifestyle catching up with him, plus his more serious often moody if not sad look along with the dreadul bare chested frizzy permed white suited 'Donny Osmond' image all went badly against Allan later
dressing up as Fonzie for 'This is it' didn't work and I agree his whiskered pony tailed smarter suited look was probably his best post sixties / early seventies image

re Allan's hair - sorry but Clarkey IS bald ! - there's a rare picture of Allan minus his hairpiece at a charity function meeting a lady at the event which was used in the local press at the time and was reproduced in an old edition of 'Carousel' - someone on here no doubt has it...(?) I was quite shocked when I saw it and I do wonder if the dreaded mid seventies frizzy perm he had circa 1975-77 was to blame ? Would love to see that pic (not that I need any proof!).
I think Gee meant me! I've found this photo from 1995 but not very good quality:

They were re-mixes, 'Pieces' had a bit of re-recording on the instrumentation too I believe - without re-checking I think the bass guitar differed and they altered the tempo a bit - there are separate recording dates in the session listings shown too re 'Born A Man' the mix is different and I think they may have mixed back Mike's voice somewhat to more of a backup vocal, the first version is more a clear three part harmony, but the later version sounds more of a Sylvester/Hicks duet with the third voice more behind in the mix and the instrumentation was made a bit more prominent re volume - but I agree the two versions are very similar and virtually identical (I understand Tim went with the listed 'B' side to 'Curly Billy' which falls within the dates of this latest CD set) 'Pieces' sounds much more polished on the 'Hollies' album - I'll need to go back and listen again, but there sounded to be some additional (clearer?) cymbal work too. Likewise 'Born A Man' which also sounds perhaps a little sharper in the high end. Will need to go back and try to compare. I think this issue also raised it's head on the old forum years back.

I'm guessing many of you will now have this set. It's nice to have the material in chronological order, and it's a convenient box (I'll probably have another set in work). A good booklet, with plenty of information, albeit three photographs not from the period covered by the set. It would also have been good to have some of the later tracks remastered, but hey-ho, it's all down to £$. I also notice that just Bobby Elliott is credited for 'Burn Fire Burn' - was Bernie Calvert not a co-writer on this track, too?

Is "Head Out of Dreams" completely out of print at this stage? I live in the USA and see a few copies going for exorbitant prices on Amazon. Regret that I did not take the plunge in 2017 and pick up a copy. Thanks in advance!

I saw that last night and tried it myself but unfortunately it won’t ship to the US. And apparently due to Brexit I assume, the shipping costs are now almost as much as the item itself. I used to order from Amazon UK fairly regularly but the past couple I tried the shipping increase made the overall cost way higher than ordering from Amazon US as an import. Mark

Received my copy of this in the mail today. This era of the band is completely new to me as far as I know so I’m anxious to check out the first disc. The 6 disc dual paneled jewel case is pretty funky…never saw one like it. Glad none of the spindles were broken, I’ve never seen a replacement case like this.

They are really easy to get. Try Bags Unlimited in Rochester New York. By the way "Head Out Of Dreams" is not complete. Kind of a trick question.

Mark Got to listen to Disc 1 this weekend and Wow, I loved it. Basically the “Hollies” album and related singles with only a little overlap with the following album. Really sold album. Songs, production, singing & playing, stereo placement, everything. So many neat things going on throughout. I’m sure the remaining discs will get a little odd as the overlap between albums becomes more noticeable, but with the state of their later catalog on CD I’m guessing that’s an ok compromise. And since this is my first time hearing this material, I don’t have the original track sequence burned into my head anyway. Looking forward to hearing this again soon. Mark
