This show is really great; the band playing live and sounding sensational. It points out how magnificent the band were when they actually played live as opposed to the cheesy result coming from miming.

You sure they're playing live? I thought it was just a live vocal over pre-recorded backing tracks.

They are playing live. Butterfly has the orchestral tape of course.

Sounds like it’s only singing live, everyone did it, yes mystery keyboards. Would love to see a good quality clip of this.

It is more “live” than the miming $hit found elsewhere, especially UK TV.

Hi Moorlock i think fans of these shows were just happy to get a chance to see their idols on TV, not sure how many fully live music shows were around in the 60’s, 70’s . To be honest not sure what the problem with the bands miming on TV, think the idea when you see the acts in concert then you get the live show. Plus these were times when we didn’t have YouTube so you had little chance of seeing these acts.

Until MuchMusic in 1984 (we didn't get MTV in Canada), we lived for these shows if we didn't live in the four Canadian cities that got big name concerts. TV appearances were an event. We knew they were lip synced. We didn't care.

I recall a writer mentioning this very subject. Referring to The Hollies on Hullaballoo in 1965, he said “lipsyncing is something that should be officially declared obscene”. I agree 100%. Now when another great Manchester band (Wayne Fontana &The Mindbenders) appeared on the same show, they did 2 songs totally live. What a shame The Hollies didn’t. (And why did The Hollies get only one song?).

All countries had their share of both miming shows and live shows. Beat Club was German and American Bandstand was... American. Both shows legendary and both were (mostly) mimed. It's not "especially UK" at all. I just love seeing The Hollies on colour videotape. Bobby also famously went out of his way to still be flamboyant "even on shows where we had to mime".

The band played totally live on the Hullaballoo stage in the US (not a miming from London), playing “The Game of Love” and what should have been the follow up single, “She’s Got the Power”. The group also played totally live on The Mike Douglas Show, doing their new single “It’s Just a little bit too late”. They are on Youtube.
