BBC4 are showing a number of Bobbie Gentry episodes from 1968 next Friday evening, 3rd November.
The edition scheduled for 10pm has The Hollies as special guests.
I remember seeing this all those years ago but I'm sure it will be well worth seeing again.

Very welcome news! I've been wanting to see these shows for more years than I can remember. Bobbie was an amazing talent so gonna be a bit of a lethal dose of her in her prime!
I do kinda wonder why they're showing them all in one go at this point in time, but whoever decided to liberate them this way deserves to be applauded. It'll be great to finally enjoy/acquire The Hollies' performance in pristine quality as opposed to the nth generation copy we've had for many years - I love the performance of "Louisiana Man", one of those inspired oddball moments that actually came off well. With the newly restored "Colour Me Pop" show it's surprising we now have two of The Hollies earliest UK colour TV appearances still surviving.

Hollies not just in colour but specifically on colour videotape is a joy. I am reminded of Peter Checksfield's clip of them miming to Dear Eloise in Germany. The clothes are among their most colourful and the band are in their most playful mood ever. Allan even spins around! He never does that! We actually have more colour video of 60s Hollies than we do of The Beatles! I too am looking forward to finally seeing this in broadcast quality. I love Louisiana Man, some amazing Hollies Holy grails happen to exist from 1968. Against just about every imaginable odd too.

I’m really looking forward to this. We’ve all seen the fairly low-gen copies of this show for a while; did they just perform the three songs ‘Blowin In The Wind’, ‘A Taste of Honey’ and ‘Louisiana Man’? I think that Dutch TV network showed the first two clips with re-dubbed audio form the studio recordings, but these were all performed live on the Bobbie Gentry Show.
It is amazing that all this stuff has arrived at once, combined with the bit of live colour footage from Australia in 1970 going up on YouTube earlier in the year, it’s been a good year for Hollies fans!

Seems the format would be the guest artistes would do two songs then one with Bobbie herself. Goodness knows what song she ended up doing with Long John Baldry in one of the other shows so gonna be interesting to find out shortly! From what I remember Bobbie mentions seeing The Hollies when she introduces them and indeed she had - she was at the Lewisham Odeon show that we have the live recording from which I think was a few weeks before this show. It does make me hopeful that BBC4 may unearth and show the remains of Julie Felix's show which had some notable guest stars though sadly as we know the edition with The Hollies and Jimmy Page is too damaged for transmission and whilst I think it could be recovered, the process would be too costly and timely.

I thought Graham really overwhelmed the performances. He needed to tone it down a bit.
Allan's expression before Louisiana Man was quiet funny to see.

Think the mix man has a hard job on his hands- Graham looks like he's been told to stand way back from the mic, yet he's still loud!!😂😂Does Tony even have a mic on ' Blowin '?? " Graham...can you just go back a bit please......no, a bit further.....a bit more.. ? Oh hell, that'll have to do.. "😂😂

Just watched the whole show. Criminal it took 55 years for it to be seen again as I thoroughly loved it. Bobbie's in magnificent form throughout exuding pure cool - those silver boots and getting a performance of "Ode To Billie Joe" is the icing on the cake. As for the lads, quite something seeing this in pristine quality seeing all the finer details, notably Allan's wink to Graham at the start of "Louisiana Man". Yes, Graham is a bit on the loud side but he's clearly enjoying himself and perhaps got a bit carried away. A wonderful piece of vintage television I'm delighted to finally get to enjoy.

Absolutely brilliant. I did watch the show when it was first shown in 1968 but we didn't have a colour TV back then so had to watch it in black and white. It was fantastic to see the whole show in colour.
In fact, i watched all the Bobbie Gentry shows on Friday night and they were superb. One of the shows from 1971 though was in black and white for some reason?
In answer to Baz's earlier question, Long John Baldry and Bobbie Gentry sang 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' together.

One of the shows from 1971 though was in black and white for some reason? In answer to Baz's earlier question, Long John Baldry and Bobbie Gentry sang 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' together. As you probably remember, colour TV's back in 1968 were VERY expensive and not many people had them hence the rental boom in the early 70's of colour TV's as that was the only affordable way most could experience colour TV so the amount of viewers who saw Bobbie's shows back in 1968 in colour would be pitifully small, maybe around a thousand, if that. I'll be watching the Baldry show later and learning that's the song he and Bobbie duetted on sounds even more bizarre than The Hollies' collaboration! Baldry was an odd one as I know he performs "Morning Dew" yet this was the era when he was doing his MOR crooner stuff which sure, it bagged him a number one hit but gave out very mixed signals regarding his talents! As for the 1971 that was in black and white, a common issue during the early colour era as the colour videotapes were regularly recycled and wiped with new material hence a lot of early colour shows exist as black and white film recordings which was what happened with the "Colour Me Pop" show which producer Steve Turner had made and held on to. Thankfully the BBC too often screwed up when making b+w recordings forgetting to switch off a colour carrier switch hence a smeared colour signal ended up on the film recording and can now be decoded to restore the original colour picture which was used to restore the CMP show. As amazing as the results can be, it still doesn't quite have the same thrill of seeing a show off the original colour videotape as we experienced watching these Bobbie shows!

Baldry's It Ain't Easy LP from 1971 is one of my all-time favourites. Saw him live at our university pub in 1993 (for $2!)...I know I haven't seen that many live concerts in my life compared to most of you, but he was THE most charismatic frontman ever.

Yes, by all accounts, Baldry had an unforgettable stage presence and was very influential, similar to John Mayall giving exposure/breaks to the likes of Clapton and co, Baldry did likewise with Rod Stewart and Elton John - and both Rod and Elton never forgot it either as they both helped him out when they became big. Kinda strange how his career played out - his family were really embarrassed when he "sold out" and did his MOR phase as he was desperate to have a hit record but once that was out of his system, his career became much more idiosyncratic.

More to his roots, really. Then he moved to Canada and because a prolific voiceover artist for cartoons. Including Dr. Ivo Robotnik on The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog!

Here you go folks ....... Fantastic 😊😊 Many thanks Tony😊 The orchestration is too overpowering on these songs. I don’t like this version “Stewball” at all, and “Blowin’ in the Wind” exasperates me, as does the entire Dylan album. They should have done a country album instead. Nash’s off-key singing makes me appreciate Terry Sylvester all the more.
