Is the dvd in the Dutch collection cd/dvd playable is the US? It says PAL on the artwork which would normally indicate not playable-yet I'm seeing positive reviews from US customers. Any thoughts?

I believe a laptop can read it? I could be wrong. Region-free players exist although they're more common in the EU. And there are ways to crack the code so your Region 1 player can play Region 2.

I checked my DVD copy today
- it only states PAL and nowhere on the DVD or CD / DVD Cover booklet does it state the Region so I would assume it is Region 2 only
as Bee states a 'Region Free' DVD player would be the best choice - I got a Toshiba one as most of my fav American classic TV shows were only out in the USA in Region 1 format
It is possible to unlock the pre-set Regional code on a DVD player however I have heard of 'issues' re DVDs either then 'freezing' or just not playing properly thereafter so it's not really worth making a perfectly reliable DVD player set to your region go wrong, and wiser to splash out on a Region free player so you can then enjoy DVDs from anywhere

Good news, I think. I was able to play my copy of the Dutch DVD on my USA DVD player. As a 1st test, I pulled out a known PAL DVD region 0 disc (a Pathe "Year To Remember - the 1960s"), and it too played just fine. That surprised me, as I didn't know PAL region 0 would play on this USA DVD player, so I learned something new today myself, ha. As a 2nd test, I grabbed a known PAL DVD region 2 disc (a Doctor Who), and it would NOT play on this player. Thus, this Dutch DVD appears to be a PAL region 0, which should play on USA DVD players. Howzat?
Edit: though I am not an expert on NTSC and PAL. Per this Wiki article, it sounds like some PAL discs may not be viewable on NTSC players and TVs even if they're region free or 0. You might need to consult your DVD player owners manual to find out. Or borrow a PAL region 0 DVD from a friend or a library.
Here's a paragraph from Wiki:
However, most NTSC players cannot play PAL discs, and most NTSC TVs do not accept 576i video signals as used on PAL/SECAM DVDs. Those in NTSC countries, such as the United States, generally require both a region-free, multi-standard player and a multi-standard television to view PAL discs, or a converter box, whereas those in PAL countries generally require only a region-free player to view NTSC discs. There are also differences in pixel aspect ratio (720 × 480 vs. 720 × 576 with the same image aspect ratio) and display frame rate (29.97 vs. 25).
Most computer-based DVD software and hardware can play both NTSC and PAL video and both audio standards.[9] Blu-ray players, which use up to 1080p signals, are backwards compatible with both NTSC and PAL DVDs.

Region 0 is 'ALL Regions' so it should play - in Europe at least - regardless of if it also states PAL on the DVD, the situation re NTSC in America may well differ of course
annoyingly the 'Dutch Collection' DVD does not actually specifically state if it is 'Region 0' only that it is PAL
- what make / model is your American DVD player, as it playing 'The Dutch Collection' suggests it could indeed be a 'Region 0' DVD only they haven't noted it as such...
strange but it can vary from DVD player to player just what codes the machine will accept and play...!
overall as a rule it's;
Region 1 is USA (NTSC) Region 2 is UK / Europe (PAL) Region 4 is Australia - however confusingly SOME Region 4 discs will play on my Region 2 DVD player while some other Region 4 DVDs will not...!!
why they did this 'Region' nonsense must purely be down to cash reasons...

My USA DVD player is a Panasonic model DVD-S29, which I bought in 2003. The operating instructions say it will play region 1 discs, or region 0 = all. There is no mention of NTSC or PAL anywhere. By process of elimination, the Dutch PAL disc must be region 0. If it were region 1, it would not play in Europe. If it were region 2, it would not play in standard USA players. I also don't see any reference to my player being a "multi-standard player", but it must be or the Dutch disc would not play.
