I was having a chat with Frederick from the Mixology Podcast and he's putting together a show about the 'Yes I Will' saga and the resulting two different versions. I was almost certain that there's an official stereo mix of the correct single version that was done before Ron Furmanek's mix in 1993, but despite my best efforts, I cannot find it. Unfortunately, I've recently lost my entire record collection due to a rather abusive/psychotic ex, so I'm not in a position to play through many of the various 1970s and 1980s compilation LPs that I believe that this non-pseudo stereo mix of the single version languishes.
A quick run through Spotify reveals that EMI seem to use Ron Furmanek's stereo mix across nearly all of the releases that are on there from the last 20 years, which would make it pretty much unique for being just about the only RF mix that was endorsed and used by EMI/The Hollies for UK distribution, the others I think being 'Not That Way At All' and the remix of 'All The World Is Love'. Occasionally, the RF remix of 'Don't Run And Hide' turns up, though there is a proper dedicated stereo mix that dates from 1966 for the American 'Bus Stop' LP. Though I will add, Spotify does mix up the sources. Frederick noticed that the version on the 'Clarke Hicks and Nash Years' CD is Ron's stereo mix, but the version on Spotify on the same release is mono.
So, am I dreaming about this earlier stereo mix or does it actually exist? I seem to recall my copy of '20 Golden Greats' has the pseudo stereo label on the sleeve, but it plays in true stereo on the LP, but that is only a memory and I've not played that LP for quite a good few years!
And while we're on the subject, is there a clean tape transfer anywhere of the alternative version that was accidentally released in 1968? I believe the 'Clarke Hicks and Nash Years' was its CD debut officially, but it's massively overcooked with its mastering, much like all the other tracks that were prepared especially for that release.
