Love these two Italian tracks, especially NPPM which they gave a beautifully haunting arrangement and great harmonies, even if their pronunciations aren't supposedly too good. Disappointing it didn't win the San Remo Festival but I see on YouTube there were a few native versions of the song floating around at the time.
So a few questions: How did The Hollies get picked to do these songs and for the San Remo Festival? Also I'm guessing this relates to the We're Alive/Kill Me Quick single also being released in Italy only later in 1967?

Good question and no, I don't know the answer.
The previous year The Yardbirds found themselves in the same contest doing 2 songs "Questa Volta" and "Paff Bum" plus Gene Pitney was singing some song as well. The Yardbirds hated the whole experience which was set up entirely by their manager Giorgio Gomelsky who believed it would act as a great publicity stunt to expand their exposure and audience. It achieved the reverse... the Italians hated The Yardbirds and took umbrage at "Paff Bum" being in English and after a long string of bizarre ideas inflicted upon them, it was the final straw for the band who decided to seek new management and Gomelsky was dismissed a month or two after.
Adding further to the weirdness and the band's bewilderment, an Italian solo singer had to sing the same two songs as well... all very strange so goodness knows what The Hollies' experience was like!

Apparently The Hollies only performed 'Non Prego Per Me' at the actual festival.

Gene's "Nessuno mi può giudicare" actually charted! Only 115 on Billboard, but #21 in Canada in 1966!

Oh! Here are the Yardbirds!
