NEW BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT (and a plea…)
Greetings one and all.
Just a heads up to all EO members but, after 'X' amount of time working on it, and regularity lurking on this page, my forthcoming detailed biography on The Hollies is nearing completion stage. As the author of previous books on David Gates & Bread and The Association (some of you may wish to check out that latter band, as they are not too well known over here in the UK!) it’s always kinda riled me that no fully detailed and extensive work has ever been attempted on the H’s. Yes, we had the Brian Southall book, but was that as in depth as it could have been? And was Bobby’s enjoyable publication too focused on his personal recollections and not on the band’s actual history?
No criticism against either work, I loved reading about the group, as I’m sure we all did – but, personally, I wanted something slightly… deeper. Hence my upcoming one-fifth-of-a-million-word version of events. If my manuscript is to be believed, that’s 540-pages – although if my printer’s estimate is more reliable that’s nearer to 650 Royal Format-pages! Hmmm... TBC…
Either way it’s a hefty chunk of Holliedom to be sure…
With the noble assistance of a few fine folk from this very site (I’ll let them announce their involvement if they wish to – or they may wish to remain anonymous for now…) I’ve pulled together the near-as-damnit full story, with the hope of seeing it edited and published during early-mid 2021 – if all goes to schedule.
Now, I know you’re all going ask if the actual band members, or Hollies Ltd. contributed in any way or were involved at all – and the honest answer to that, presently, is ‘no’, but through various close contacts and former colleagues, along with detailed research, rare interviews and Lord knows what else, I still think you are going to find the long, long journey as it unfolds on the many pages before you, an enjoyable trip down memory lane.
And now comes the plea…
As this will be self-published and self-financed, the opportunity to include some good images becomes restricted somewhat (have you any idea how much it costs to license photographs for book distribution from the Getty Archives ?!) Yes, I will undoubtedly license a few ‘official’ images, but I’m also hoping that there are some generous peeps out there who, over the course of time, may have taken some good, personal photos of the band, in concert or otherwise - that are copyright free – and may wish to donate/see them included in the book.
I’ve covered the very early years, right up to the present day so anything will be considered! Full credit will, of course, be afforded in the final print run...
Someone has already offered pictures of their extensive memorabilia range- and that is an option to explore – but it’s actual band images I’m curious about.
I can be reached via the following email address: Dojotonepublications@gmail.com – just mark the subject ‘Hollies’.
I hope to hear from some of you soon, so onwards and upwards friends - and let’s get the focus in these worrying times back where it once belonged - the magic and the music of The Hollies!
Stay safe – and here’s to 2021!
