So, have just been reading through some German fan magazines, and 2 things leapt out, that I had to check out with you guys who may know? Tony had taken" California Dreaming" to the boys, but they had opted for ," I can't let go" ,instead??
Then Allan had put forward " For what it's worth" for early song for Europe rounds here, but it didn't get through? Anyone know if these are rumours or truth?๐ค

Ive heard that California Dreamin was considered. I think they would have done it proud but I can't let go is such a classic track.

They were certainly wise to opt for "I Can't Let Go" instead of "California Dreaming" which I'm sure they would have done a fine job on, but "I Can't Let Go" is one of their most extraordinary moments!

Allan Clarke and Denny Doherty are my two favourite singers and it would be like choosing which one of my children I love best.

They certainly did consider 'California Dreaming', but before the Mamas and Papas had a hit in the UK with it I think. They'd met the M&Ps on their 1966 tour of America and I believe they'd even stayed at their house in Laurel Canyon. I recently watched a documentary about the music of Laurel Canyon and Graham Nash stated that they stayed with the M&Ps in 1966.
As for 'For What Its Worth', I've not head that rumour before - though Allan was a big Buffalo Springfield fan, with 'Expecting To Fly' inspiring him to write 'Wings'.
Another song they were offered but was retracted before they could record it was Elton John's 'Your Song'.

The ' For what it's worth' I was meaning was Allan's song? ( For what it's worth I'm sorry). The rumour was he'd submitted it for Eurovision? I wonder how many other songwriters try this and get knocked back early in the ' strange ' filtering system ๐

I certainly don't believe the Eurovision rumour. 'Puppet On A String', 'Congratulations', 'Boom-Bang-A-Bang'... UK Eurovision entries in the late 60s tended to be lame in the extreme. If Allan/The Hollies were going to submit anything, then it would probably be something like 'Jennifer Eccles'.

If ever there was a Hollies song that would have fitted Eurovision, it's "Jennifer Eccles" and given the pile of dross that won that year "La La La", The Hollies would have been in with a great chance!

But this song was 1988, a different era, and Gary Benson, Allan's co writer on this, had quite a history with writing for Eurovision, which makese think there might be more to it than a rumour. And ballads like this in 1988 Eurovision were very popular.๐

Can't say I'm even familiar with the song, as I rarely listen to anything post-Nash these days apart from (very occasionally) 'Hollies Sing Dylan'.
