Hi All, I just thought I'd let you see my full footage of video I took at the Hollies Carousel Convention at Bournemouth 6th April 2003. Certain parts of it you might have seen on youtube, but now I have added footage not seen before. There is footage of Carl Wayne, Tony Hicks, Alan Coates, Ray Stiles, Ian Parker and an interesting interview with Bobby Elliott by Tony M the guy who writes for The Carousel Newsletter. I have upscaled it from HQ to HD and made it into widescreen. It was filmed on an old Sony Handycam with a mini DV tape in it. You might see people you know as well. Can be seen at This link here

My initial shock is that Carl Wayne had an (almost) cockney accent! Haven't watched the rest yet.
Quick question: are you a different Geoff from "Gee"?

Hi Peter,
Carl probably lost his Brummie accent with all his moving around and probably living in London. No Gee is not me. You will find my own website if you click on the home button on the video link I gave.

Thanks for sharing your video, Geoff. It has brought back some fond memories of Carl. He was a true gent. I'll treasure the attached photo forever.

Hi Anthony and John, Yes that was Christine with the pink hat. Yes Carl was always keen to talk to everybody he could. See attached photos, the ones that John was queuing up to get signed in the video. The photos were taken at Preston the year before:)

I also took a video of the Convention in 2006 at Eastbourne, it was taken with a Sony digital camera. This can be seen here

Thanks for uploading this Geoff. Watched it all last night. Tony Hicks never seems particularly comfortable in such situations. Do they ('Carousel' et al) still hold these conventions, and if not, when was the last one? I think it was the Preston convention (2002?) which I nearly went to, but alas didn't.

Hi James,
Yes I'm afraid Tony Hicks always seems a miserable so and so at these conventions (seems to be thinking, "I wish I was somewhere else" ) The last one was held at Eastbourne 2006. The Hollies Carousel have been short on their newsletters also. I've been to all the conventions apart from the first one, which was held in Brighton I believe.
I'm going to make a video with all the photos I took of all the other conventions shortly (those were the days before I had movie capabilities)
Cheers and Happy Hollie Days
Geoff

Yes this is and always has been one of the big problems re The Hollies - the fact is that neither Tony or Allan Clarke were ever really 'naturals' at PR - while Bobby has got better at it in latter years but for many years Graham Nash WAS - with the band's happy approval - essentially the 'public face & voice' of The Hollies (with just the odd comments by Allan Clarke - normally 'agreeing with Graham' !)
This was one major reason that Nash's pre-announced exit at the end of 1968 was considered (by them) to be a far bigger 'blow' overall than it really should have been...considering distinctive Lead singer, guitarist/harmony voice, drummer, & bass/keyboardist, and at least two prime songwriters remained onboard !
Terry Sylvester was another decent PR man, always friendly with the fans, and later Carl Wayne was another 'natural' - probably their best 'PR' guy since Nash
They probably suffered for this 'reluctance' and weakness at 'PR' because besides that they never had a strong 'image' as such and outside the fan base are often 'forgotten' or 'overlooked' by many - how often have you read about news paper reviewers claiming they NEVER realised so many hit songs they knew well were done by the Hollies...?
I think like Allan in 1969 after Graham's exit...Tony too became a 'reluctant onstage co-frontman' from 1981 after Terry left (Tony only uttered the odd word or two onstage before, or did just an occasional song intro etc) ...and was only too happy to let Carl Wayne then effortlessly dominate the onstage PR work in the early 2000-2004 Hollies concerts
Later after losing Carl Tony then HAD to resume doing the main onstage PR stuff - Peter Howarth helping him more & more and even Bobby addresses the audience now too...
meeting the fans has always seemed something of a 'chore' to certain Hollies band members - at least it looks that way
I remember that when 'Carousel' were first planning these get togethers for the fans BOTH Ex-Hollies Nash & Sylvester sent band related items along to show the fans but neither Clarke, Hicks or Elliott did !
