I don’t think I’ve ever seen one. Were they ever photographed or otherwise documented pre-Hicks or is there no surviving evidence of the very first line-up?

I believe that guy is Jay Vickers aka 'Freddie The Flea' an early friend and roadie for The Hollies whom Rod Shields later replaced

And to add my two cents worth, have NEVER seen a photo with Farrell/Steele in The Hollies or previous incarnations. Unfortunately he departed before the bigger ticket bookings commenced requiring publicity photos etc. Any photo with him would place the shot no later than early March 63. Don Rathbone had no photos of him. It remains one of the most desired images to be found - another Hollie Grail!
