There's an issue of Jackie Magazine on eBay right now, with a photo taken at the time of the "Hey Willy" TV appearance. They have the same clothes on and Hicks is sporting his thankfully-short-lived 'stache. Was this the last photo taken before Clarke bailed?

I assume you mean this one? Good spotting. This pic dates from 12 May 1971 so there will be others around after this time given AC was actively participating in the band until much later in the year. But...where are they? Not sure! The Hollies appeared on 'It's Lulu' recorded on 30 Aug 1971 but I've never seen a pic of this. They also recorded a clip on 'The Dave Cash Radio Programme' (yes, a weird name for a TV show) in October 1971 (with Clarke) which was screened late in the following year (after Rickfors was well and truly ensconced!). Never seen a pic of this anywhere though the clip is supposed to survive amongst other DCRP eps in a box in a British warehouse..somewhere.

Is it known what song(s) they did on these shows? They performed 'Long Dark Road' on 'The Dave Cash Radio Programme'. Not sure about The Hollies clip, but most artists on that show mimed in outdoor locations (the show is often mistakenly called 'Music Unlimited', as highlights from these shows - though NOT The hollies - were issued on several volumes of official VHS tapes in the early 80s).

Long Dark Road live with Clarke. Now THAT would be something to hear! When the band played L.A. for the last time in 1975, at one point Terry asked the audience "Any requests?". I shouted "Long Dark Road", to no avail. Terry said "We don't know it". We know that bands already have their set list in place anyway. The set could have used that song in place of turkeys like "Lucy" and "I'll be your baby tonight". And why on earth were they still playing "Just One Look"? Still in their lazy cabaret mode. "Time Machine Jive" really would have livened things up.

Interesting. I always assumed Distant Light was never promoted by the band given the Clarke-upheaval at the time.

I am reliably informed that every episode of 'The Dave Cash Radio Programme' still survives on 16mm.

I am reliably informed that every episode of 'The Dave Cash Radio Programme' still survives on 16mm. Many years ago the ITV (ITN Source) website used to list all the DCRP eps inc the songs etc. It was quite detailed and 'Long Dark Road' was the only song listed for The Hollies amongst the eps (and erroneously listed as 'It's Over' to boot!). The eps existed but getting to them was another matter. Harlech Television (HTV) had to move the archive and at some point they got put into the too hard basket. Supposedly Dave Cash himself was unable to acquire copies of the eps. Yet some clips from the shows were "officially?" released on VHS compilations called (I think) 'Music Unlimited' many years earlier. The Hollies' song was not included amongst those issued, possibly because I understand LDR was filmed in a studio whereas many of those released were filmed externally in natural daylight. I believe these clips of The Equals and Lulu are from the DCRP series. Long Dark Road remains unseen since 1972 but is known to survive, as Peter has rightly mentioned. One day...

Yes, the Equals and Lulu clips are indeed from this series, though many more exist (quite a few are listed in both 'Channelling The Beat!' and 'Look Wot They Dun!'). Below are the track listings for those circa 1980 VHS releases, and note that the T. Rex and Slade tracks are also studio performances (so this can't be the reason why The Hollies weren't included):
Track listing: Let's Get This Show on the Road [Heads Hands & Feet]; Clotho's Web [Julie Felix]; From My Head to My Toes [Barry Ryan]; International [Mary Hopkin]; Sacramento [Middle of the Road]; Abbot of the Vale [Tony Hazzard]; Eli's Coming [Lulu]
Track listing: Look Wot You Dun [Slade]; Ride Me Easy Rider [Vinegar Joe]; Birthday Lady [Emitt Rhodes]; Mary Ann [Hot Chocolate]; Life Is for Livin' [Laura]; Everything's Gonna Be Allright [Christie]; Josie [Kris Kristofferson]
Track listing: Freeway [Danta]; Kid's Stuff [David Elliot]; Soley Soley [Middle of the Road]; What's Good About Goodbye? [The Flirtations]; Fire, Water, Earth and Air [Julie Felix]; Knock Three Times [Dawn]; Matrimony [Gilbert O'Sullivan]
Track listing: Safety in Numbers [Heads Hands & Feet]; Bring Me Back [Tony Kelly]; Nothing But a Heartache [The Flirtations]; Sarah [Marmalade]; Poppa Joe [Sweet]; Fortieth Floor [Lesley Duncan]; Me and Bobby Magee [Kris Kristofferson]
Track listing: Stand Up and Be Counted [The Equals]; Gotta Be Me Gotta Be You [Tony Hazzard]; Give Me Love [The Flirtations]; What Are You Doing Sunday? [Dawn]; I Believe in Love [Hot Chocolate]; Streets of London [Ralph McTell]; Oh Me Oh My [Lulu]
Track listing: One for the Road [Christie]; Invisible Man [David Elliot]; Bring a Little Light Into My World [Pickettywitch]; Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys [The Equals]; Earth Mother [Lesley Duncan]; United We Stand [Brotherhood of Man]; You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone [The Beach Boys]
Track listing: Get It On [T. Rex]; Simple Joys [Kenny Young]; California Sunday Morning [Brotherhood of Man]; Love Song [Lesley Duncan]; Let's Work Together [Canned Heat]; Eloise [Barry Ryan]; Honky Tonk Woman [The Rolling Stones]
Track listing: Northcote Arms [Mungo Jerry]; Gotta Be Me Gotta Be You [Tony Hazzard]; Could Have Been a Lady [Hot Chocolate]; Tell All the World [Laura]; Jean the Machine [Heathmore]; San Francisco Bay [Sylvia McNeill]; Don't Go Near the Water [The Beach Boys]
Track listing: Get Down and Get with It [Slade]; Making the Same Mistake [Tony Kelly]; Pretty Belinda [Chris Andrews]; Something's Wrong [New World]; Isn't It a Pity [Dana]; 24 Hours from Tulsa [Gene Pitney]; Loving Her Was Easier [Kris Kristofferson]
Track listing: In the Summertime [Mungo Jerry]; Rose Alice [Kenny Young]; Take Me in Your Arms [The Flirtations]; Sister Jane [New World]; Remo Four [Ashton, Gardner and Dyke]; Beachcomber [White Plains]; Resurrection Shuffle [Lulu]
Track listing: Jeepster [T. Rex]; Really Wanted You [Emitt Rhodes]; Sad Old Kind of Movie [Sylvia McNeill]; My Baby Loves Lovin' [White Plains]; Will the Circle Be Unbroken [Pentangle]; Hold On [The Flirtations]; Nothing Rhymed [Gilbert O'Sullivan]

Interesting Peter! The clip of Radancer by Marmalade on YouTube looks like it comes from this. Would be fascinating to see this. Are there any other Distant Light era TV appearances?

Are there any other Distant Light era TV appearances? As far as I'm aware, this was the only Distant Light TV promotion.

Hmmm... that seems to date Tony's dungarees to pre-Rickfors era, earlier than previously thought.

How strange to see 1971 Hollies with Tony's Rickfors era dungarees, Bobby's new drum kit with new 'Hollies' text on the bass drum and Allan's long hair from his solo phase. What an interesting and poignant piece of the puzzle. Also interesting that there were no singles from 'Distant Light' in the UK but they were promoting an album track on TV. Much like in 1970 doing 'Isn't It Nice' and 'Frightened Lady' on TV. It seems that it survives twice over then, on the 16mm studio tape (presumably in great quality) and as part of the infamous "computer tape" haul, which the guys at Kaleidoscope have been trying to retrieve what's on them for years now, having to literally build a machine that will play the tapes and decode the information on them. I expect the screen grab is from one of the early experiments with this, and the fuzziness of it is unfortunately just how the medium survives and how they're getting it to play.

Seeing this still, gee how great would it be if we had another Dutch Collection CD/DVD. Longing for more rare and unseen clips
