I am looking for a little information about this compilation CD from France around 1989. This is a 50 track 2CD set up to and including Reunion Of The Heart. I think this CD marks an early stereo release of 'Cos You Like To Love Me if not the first. Can anyone confirm this? Can anyone comment on the sound quality as it was prepared by Martinay Martial, the same guy that did the Magic Records things? It has lots of hits, b sides and album tracks so it seems an interesting compilation. It even includes Honey And Wine the EP track. Does this ever come up for sale? Anyone have any other thoughts about this CD?

Hi DF - I can recall seeing a review of this in the 1990 German Upfront magazine put together by Ulli Eichblatt. It's very rare to see copies on eBay. Amongst my Hollies CD collection I don't own this one so I can offer nothing my self. Perhaps Gee, Cam Burns, James T or Knut owns this doubleCD of those who lurk here?? Cheers Simon

Knut I recall you giving me a burn of this many years ago. I can't locate it now but have only lo fi MP3 files of this CD. I was wanting to try and find a copy but don't recall the sound quality. What concerns me about the sound is the guy from Magic Records put it together. It was issued well before Magic started to release CD so it may be OK. I am always concerned about his source for the music. He does a lot from dodgy sources.

Listening to it now. I think it sounds fine. Must have been an early release for Too many hearts get broken, This it it and Reunion of the heart on CD. Is Running through the night rare in stereo?

Running Through The Night (Bside of I Can't Let Go)is pretty common in stereo. Most compilations that have that track use the stereo version. Even the Clarke Hicks Nash Years uses the stereo version although on the Abbey Road 1963-1966 they used the mono version. That CD was most certainly an early stereo issue of those 3 later tracks.

re the released mono versions, 'Mad Professor Blyth' (original 1970 Parlophone single 'B' side of 'I Can't Tell The Bottom...') plus the mono 'Hollies Sing Dlyan' (PMC 7078) are chief UK mono rare versions now
while the rare mono 'Kill Me Quick' minus backing vocals (original Italian single version) and the mono USA single edit of 'Survival of The Fittest' plus that overseas (Argentina I think) mono 'Hollies Sing Hollies' version (not the full UK tracks) along with that Mexican EP early version of 'Try it', are notable overseas mono versions, some original overseas mono versions of songs like that Australian alternate 'Poison Ivy' etc are also mono rarities - some demos of later seventies singles and overseas singles can be in mono too (I'm sure I've heard a mono 'Curly Billy' at some point !)
a decent A's and B's compilation of UK plus notable overseas hit singles in their original mono versions (as released) from say 1963 up to 1970 would make a fine Hollies compilation featuring the Clarke-Nash and Clarke-Sylvester versions of the group.
I recently picked up a EMI Belgium 2CD set; 'The Hollies: 40 Alle Veertig Goed' (EMI 50999 4407292 6) which dates from 2012 that features 40 hits spread across 2 CDs, interestingly it puts Nash era hits as the first 11 tracks on disc one, then the first 10 tracks on disc 2 followed by Sylvester era tracks on each disc and includes both of the Rickfors hits (on disc 2)
'Pay You Back With Interest', 'Do The Best You Can', 'Blowin in The Wind' (Nash version), 'Goodbye Tomorrow', 'Man Without A Heart', 'Son of A Rotten Gambler', and 'Falling Calling' are included on the set, and while 'Just One Look' is in mono, plus a couple of the 1963 hits ( tho' the original single version of 'Searchin' is featured in stereo) all other tracks are in stereo, it was quite cheap on Amazon UK and the sound is good.
The CD set features another photo from the 'Stay With...' album cover photo sessions from 1964 with Graham wearing that hideous red & black striped sweater and Allan dressed like his grandfather complete with trouser braces !

The mono version Gee refers of the Australian alternate Poison Ivy is actually stereo and run time is around 3 minutes. It is available on CD on the 2014 Japanese mini LP sleeve reissue of Stay With The Hollies.
In the USA many of the 45s release there were in Promo form for radio play and had mono and stereo sides. I'm guessing for mono for AM and stereo for FM. A lot of those tracks were edited in some form as well.
That Belgium CD look good. For all the dislike for the Ron Furmanek mixes from the early 90s, the do turn up on issues around the world. Can't all be bad. That cover photo is an alternate from the Stay With The Hollies LP photo session.

I just came across this thread and wanted to know if there's any versions that are only available on this collection. Is it worth seeking out?
