As you've all probably read, Beatles producer George Martin has died aged 90. There was an excellent documentary aired last night on Radio 2 detailing how he recorded The Beatles. It's a fascinating insight to how some of the now iconic sounds were created. You can hear it here: bbc.in/PveSAoObviously he worked in Abbey Road alongside Hollies producer Ron Richards and the two worked together for form 'AIR Studios' for which the Hollies were the first artists to have an album released that was recorded there (Distant Light). Martin was the one who offered them 'If I Needed Someone' after having rejected it as a possible Beatles single. He co-produced the The Hollies/Peter Sellers track 'After The Fox' in 1966. The session was a nightmare according to Bobby Elliott due to Burt Bacherach wanting take after take (as he was famous for!) and the two producers Martin and Richards battling over who's respective recording artist would be more prominent in the mix! Martin was part of the filmed 'On A Carousel' session in early 1967 as the Beatles weren't working at the same pace as The Hollies and he thought they'd be more interesting to film ie, a "complete" recording session. Any more Hollies/George Martin anecdotes?

I was reminded online of Gary Brooker's superb 'No More Fear Of Flying' solo album (his first) in 1979, produced by Martin. It features Gary's take on 'Say It Ain't So, Joe', probably tackled in response to the Hollies making such a good version on 'Five Three One Double Seven O Four'. It would also have been just before this time that he had been approached to front The Hollies, and of course had contributed 'Harlequin'. That's the best I can offer - next!

Hi guys or Cameron
Anybody been able to download the Martin BBC thingie Cameron mentions above.
I have tried to record it but it seems the content is not available in Australia or I am going about it wrong.
Can anyone help me out with a copy please. I think it would be interesting about how Martin went about recording the Beatles in the early days.
I am guessing Richards would have used a similar process to recording the Hollies. That is something I am trying to reseasch.
Might be easiest if you can email me cfarre11@tpg.com.au
cheers
Chris
