While making flac files of my Hollies CD and making notes with the tracks I found some interesting variations in the mixes. I guess any serious collector will have the mixes and be aware of them.
I found the most enjoyable one to be the mix on Hollies Greatest issued by Hansa. That has all the later period Nash tracks on it and was the place a lot of these tracks first appeared in stereo. This mix has centre vocals and a nice spread of the instruments. Don't think this one has made it to CD yet.
There is the original UK stereo mix with basically vocals in one channel and instruments in the other.
The Epic Greatest Hits from the Master tapes basically is the same as that UK version but with studio chatted before the track
Ron Furmanek's mix on the 30th Anniversary CD is mostly mono until later in the track. This one has been used occasionally. This one has studio chatter but is slightly different to the USA Epic one.
The 2003 remaster brings the stereo field closer to the centre. A bit like a half fold down of each channel (thanks Cameron I like the terminology).
The USA stereo on the Evolution LP has something like a reverb effect going on in the right channel.
With the remastering of the last 15/30 years, it seems that the people doing the mastering like to do the half fold down trick. I guess it makes the track sound more mono and not so left and right (I don't mind this form of stereo as it was of the times).
