This was announced on the band's official FB page today. Anybody got a line on a tracklist? No mention of any special rarities or anything. "We are pleased to announce that a new collection: THE HOLLIES: CHANGIN’ TIMES will be released this July! The Five-Disc Set from Parlophone includes Every Album Track And Non-Album Single Released Between 1969 And 1973. Stay tuned for more details on how to pre-order your copy!"

Surely SURELY this has to include the remastered 'Out On The Road' album? A 5CD set could include Dylan, Sing Hollies, Confessions, Distant Light, Romany and OOTR, I'd have thought?

Same look, different angles. Top: a print I bought on eBay. Bottom: Cropped from a seller's photo of TopPop, Oct. 4, 1969.

Was this photo shoot not the source of the images for the Hollies Sing Hollies album, too?

Was this photo shoot not the source of the images for the Hollies Sing Hollies album, too? I think just Bobby and Terry's individual pics, as far as I can tell.

Hopefully the Out On The Road LP is included in this set. What a shame if it isn't. I notice the dates January 1969 to March 1973. That last date has me wondering if the collection doesn't end with the Jesus Was A Crossmaker/I Had A Dream single. Keeping my fingers crossed that I'm wrong.
Apparently, a 24 page booklet is enclosed, with liner notes by...wait for it......Tony Hicks!?!?!?!?! What? Is Bobby on strike? Here's hoping Tony does a fair job with the group, and not consign Terry and Bernie, and for that matter, Mikael, to the shadows.

The last recording of anything with Rickfors was mid-March 1973, with OOTR being started in January of that year. Has Hicks not been more kind to the Rickfors years? He should be - he was the major player in that brief spell.

I guess Tony was at his most prolific during this period. He was the one who found He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother and started to push the Hollies in a more "mature" direction, he was the mastermind behind Confessions Of The Mind writing a lot of tracks by himself and then he became the reluctant frontman when Allan left. So it seems fitting that he should comment on this period in the Hollies' career.
I can't wait for this set. Even if Out On The Road doesn't feature, some of those early Hollies LPs like Hollies Sing Dylan, Hollies Sing Hollies and Confessions Of The Mind have been out of print for years. So it'll be nice to get them all in one place. I assume it's all chronological too like the Clarke Hicks & Nash Years set? I found that makes for quite interesting listening as it flows very well - particularly later on as the Hollies ventured through psychedelia, cabaret and back to mainstream pop. To hear all the styles bunched together was great.
So thank you and well done Hollies LTD for delivering the fans another gift like the Clarke Hicks & Nash Years set.

No tracklist mentioned yet, but using the January 1969 - May 1973 dates on the cover (and help from my Long Road Home sessionography), here's what the tracklist *COULD* look like **THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIAL LIST** but should be something close
DISC 1: 1. Sorry Suzanne 2. Not That Way At All 3. Blowin' in The Wind [Terry Sylvester Vocal] 4. I Shall Be Released 5. Mighty Quinn 6. This Wheel's On Fire 7. The Times, They Are A Changin' 8. The set is great as it is because Hollies Sing Dylan, Hollies Sing Hollies and Confessions Of The Mind are officially out of print and have been for some years. The only way to obtain them is though eBay, which can be expensive. If it does cover the Out On The Road sessions (which are well within the dates on the cover), this will be quite something.
Other rarities that *could* be included are: 1. Angel Of The Morning (outtake, 1969 - before Terry Sylvester joined) 2. Dang Me (outtake, 1969 - before Terry Sylvester joined) 3. The Race Is On (Hollies Sing Hollies sessions, 1969) 4. Dang Me (Terry Sylvester vocal overdub, 1969) 5. Kentucky Woman (Hollies Sing Hollies sessions, 1969) 6. Sign Of The Times (later re-make, Hollies Sing Hollies sessions, 1969) 7. Wings (Terry Sylvester vocal overdub, 1970) 8. Bobby's Prologue (Confessions Of The Mind sessions, 1970) 9. [No More] Snow On Heather Moor (Confessions Of The Mind sessions, 1970) 10. Salvation Band (Confessions Of The Mind sessions, 1970) 11. Father Machine (Distant Light sessions, 1971) 12. Heaven In Her Heart (Romany sessions, 1972) 13. On The Summer Side Of Life (Romany sessions, 1972) 14. Nearer To You (early take, Romany sessions, 1972)
There's also their live concert in Australia, 1970/1 that was recorded officially for Australian TV but I don't think for one second that this will be included.

I'm getting far too excited over what could be on this - I hope I (we!) will not be in for a big disappointment. Looking at the (approx.) timings of the albums:
Dylan - 45' Sing Hollies - 43' Confessions - 40' Distant Light - 40' Romany - 75' (remaster with copious bonus tracks from late noughties) OOTR - 35'
Not counting non-album singles and b-sides, single edits etc, end-to-end the above would fill about three and a half CDs of approx. 78' long.

"The Five-Disc Set from Parlophone includes Every Album Track And Non-Album Single Released Between 1969 And 1973." This has certainly got the juices running. It says "released" between 69 and 73. My understand that the last Hollies "recordings" for 1973 on 17 December were No More Riders and Love Makes The World Go Round. No More Riders was the Bside to The Air that I Breathe and my understanding is that was release in January 1974. Love Makes The World Go Round was release on the 74 LP Hollies (the one with the eyes). That LP was from March 74. That sort of tells me that those 2 tracks won't be on that set. With the word "released" being the guide, does that mean released in the UK and if that is so then Out On The Road tracks won't be on it. Then again how are they going to fill up 5 CDs with approx 75mins of music if they don't. The Official website does show Out On The Road being release in 1973. It doesn't show what countries. I guess we won't know until it is officially announced. That will be an interesting day. There are plenty of tracks not release that were recorded in that time frame so we can only hope that they get out on this set. Would be lovely if the mono Dylan LP was used for this but I believe that was a fold down from stereo to mono so maybe that is why it has never been issued. Would still be nice though. Hopefully the track listing comes soon. More importantly I hope the tracks are not brickwalled in sound. That is the pits and it is a shame that currently that is the fad. Get the sound as loud as possible. It would be great it at some time all the Hollies material was issued in its original flat format without all the mastering to make them loud. The one thing I find with this is due to the Hollies vocal sound the listening becomes harsh if I turn up the volume control on my amp. Not pleasant listening. Hurts the ears. Only time will tell as to what is on it.

Just as an extra to my last post, my understanding is that the last recording date with Rickfors was March 73 when they finished Out On The Road, Born A Man and I Had A Dream. If this Hollies set covers worldwide releases tracks that I am almost sure they should include all the track from Out On The Road.

I think we can be fairly certain that Out On The Road will be issued as the proposed artwork says "January 1969 - March 1973. The last Rickfors sessions were mid March 1973 for the Out On The Road LP. The Long Road Home booklet lists them in the sessionography as being from the German LP.

The set can 'include' - but there may be more! Including 'Out On The Road' would certainly boost sales with Hollies collectors (like the inclusion of the Lewisham live material did on the previous set), but there is still plenty there to tempt more casual buyers.
To be really comprehensive, were there not three versions/edits of Magic Woman Touch ('acoustic', album and single), two of Long Dark Road (album, single) and possibly two of Slow Down Go Down (album, single)? I don't imagine these would all be included, though.
It would have been nice to have the longer version of Curly Billy on the Hollies remaster a few years back - maybe it might see the light of day on the 'Wiggle That Wotsit - The Complete Hollies Aug 1973 to April 1981' 6CD set. This set will include the Live Hits album bolstered by the inclusion of a live Boulder To Birmingham and the bloody whistler removed from Amazing Grace (surely there must be the studio technology to do that now!). :-)

I'm happy they've got a second set because that means that the Clarke Hicks & Nash Years set was a strong enough seller to warrant a second part. Other artists who got the "complete" set from EMI (Donovan, Cilla Black, Seekers etc...) have so far only had one set. The only issues I had with the first set was the poor quality control (three out of the six discs had scratches on them and I've heard this is a very common problem) and the fact that it was delayed by two weeks upon physical release. The set itself is marvellous - insightful sleeve notes from Graham Nash, rare photos, that wonderful Lewisham Odeon recording and the ability to listen to the complete Hollies in true chronological order. The whole set has a wonderful flow to it because of this. Their forays into folk, psychedelia, cabaret and finally mainstream pop again are nicely grouped together depending on where the Hollies were at musically at the time.
I have similar high hopes for this set. Even if there's no concert recording, it'll just be nice to have their early Sylvester years output together in chronological order and to finally get Out On The Road on CD!

Yep, as Cameron says it is a good sign that the previous set was a good seller if they are releasing this.
At the very least it will be great to have a good CD version of Out On The Road... surely it has it be included.

Ends all the conjecture re Out on the Road. Good to see all the tracks are on disc 5. Wonder when or if it was remastered. Without checking the list appears to be in the order of recording the tracks set up the same as the original Nash set.

That's great news re: OOTR. I wonder if it's inclusion on this set necessitated TH doing the sleevenotes rather than B for 'bland' E?

Great to see OOTR getting a release but it's a pity there are no other unreleased tracks. It makes me think there is nothing more they can release or want to release from this period.
I can't see another natural opportunity to let rarities out, unless they are planning long term for Rarities II which I doubt.

Yep, I don't want to really criticise it either. Would also have been interesting to hear the stuff that was done between Nash and Sylvester such as "Angel of the Morning".

That's great news re: OOTR. I wonder if it's inclusion on this set necessitated TH doing the sleevenotes rather than B for 'bland' E? I'm also pleased as punch that Out On The Road is included. Shame that no hidden gems are being unearthed on this collection but so be it. Strange that Elliott isn't contributing the liner notes. I don't know what to make of that. Looking forward to Tony's efforts in that regard. Hopefully there will be a little more 'meat' and 'spice' in his sleevenotes than we're accustomed to with Bobby.

Post by cameron on May 22, 2015 10:35:58 GMT
I don't see it as a bad thing that Bobby hasn't done the sleeve notes - just variety and a different prospective. We got the tale from Graham on the Clarke Hicks & Nash Years set, now Tony - perhaps Bobby on the next set concluding the studio albums 1974-1983?
I always think of 1969-1973 as "Tony's Period". With Allan feeling sore and a bit disillusioned after Graham left, Tony assumed the musical leader (ie, it was his idea to record Hollies Sing Dylan) and his songwriting really came to the fore in this period. And during their brief spell with Mikael Rickfors, Tony very much became the front man for the band due to Mikael's reluctance to full fill this position. Bobby has also described the Rickfors era as "bland" before, so I think Tony is the perfect man for the job of telling the story.
In terms of rarities, maybe not the treasure trove that we experienced with the Clarke Hicks & Nash Years set - but it is worth remembering that this is a budget priced boxset and encompasses some hard to find on CD albums. It'll be a big tick on the list to get Out On The Road. I personally think they're purposely not tying up loose ends by filling these sets with rarities to allow for a remastered albums series (a la the Kinks, Small Faces, Who "Deluxe" editions) in the probably distant future. For now, these boxsets are a very welcome stop gap to bring us all up to speed with the entire back catalogue. I'd think there's probably a plan to do another set (the aforementioned 1974-1983) in the next few years and then in ten years' time or so, reissue the entire back catalogue. With every release like this, it's more exposure for the Hollies and a growing fan base.
