Sad news indeed Peter. Of huge importance in the Hollies history but also just plain awesome singers. Listening to them was the first time I really got the power of harmony where two voices become something more than two voices.

It's amazing to think that Don and Phil were Allan and Graham's idols yet the brothers were only 5 (Don) and 3 (Phil) years older than them. I've always thought that the ultimate Hollies fairytale was the fact that, Clarke and Nash having waited at the stage door post-gig after that Manchester Free Trade Hall 1960 concert to meet them, 6 years later the brothers were basically hoping that their proteges could resurrect their careers with a bunch of Hollies songs. I guess the fairytale didn't quite have the perfect happy ending given that the Two Yanks In England LP failed to halt the brothers speedy descent into an irrelevant (though still popular) nostalgia act before the decade had even closed.
Those early years of the Evs though remain pretty amazing. I'm sure Allan and Graham would be feeling Phil's passing more than most artists.
