Perhaps I've been asleep at the wheel but I just came across this on YT and realised this is the first time I've ever seen this performance. This dates from the 4 July 1975 episode of USA TV show 'The Midnight Special', and to the best of my knowledge, has never previously circulated with collectors (Peter C will be able to confirm or deny this). I can see it's been online for 14 months but it has eluded my eyes until now.
One thing that really strikes me about this clip is just how natural AC looks with the guitar in hands. The band looks very different with that extra guitarist - we all know how rocking' they looked with Rickfors adding the extra onstage axe - and lose nothing with Clarke following on here. It might just be me but Hicks' body language looks a little shrunken here as the guitar spotlight turns not to him for once, on a rare US 1970s visit post Rickfors. Clarke of course had played some guitar on stage in the pre-Hollies days of the late 1950s/early 60s until discarding for singing and playing harmonica.
Every single clip of Clarke with The Hollies doing LCW is from 1975 or onwards, frequently featuring the perm and shirtless chest. One of the holy grails of Hollies footage to be found remains the ONE time (I think) that Clarke performed the song on TV PRIOR to Rickfors' appearance - this occurred on 'It's Lulu' (TX: 4 Sept 1971)...and it's live (or at least a live or different vocal).
And does this episode survive in BBC archives? Bwahahaha! Of course not - I mean why would it...it's only a big budget variety series featuring top musical talent... so sadly, don't expect to see that clip turn up online anytime soon.

Thanks Peter. Yep, asleep at the wheel. On my own site! I'll get me coat... This is what happens when you post at 2am in the morning local time! I've cast my eyes over that thread and ridiculously I've even posted a comment there! Not my finest moment it must be said...

Its a brilliant clip, I feel it's the best performance of this song I have seen.

I too did notice Tony's body language verging on the slightly hesitant/uncomfortable side! I didn't know about the Lulu show appearance as I'd always presumed with the song hitting after Allan's departure there were no 1971 TV appearances of the song and that the earlier "Hey Willy" TV appearances were the last to feature Allan until 1973. Typical the BBC wiped it but given the various odds and ends that have been turning up on home video recordings in recent years one likes to hope it might be found on one such tape as we're still waiting to see if the lost TOTP performance of "The Baby" labelled on one such tape is playable/recoverable... a shame it wasn't in Lulu's own stash of videotapes she found about ten years ago which contained several 1969 editions of her show along with the full edition of TOTP from 6th March 1969.

Fascinating re the Lulu performance, is there a still of this Simon, I'd be intrigued to see how they look performing LCW during this period.

Hi Stranger - no, I've not seen a still from this ep and believe me, I really trawl for such things! I'm with you - I like seeing stills from lost clips to at least get a sense of how they looked, who was wearing what, instruments used etc. I think it's known in the trade as....obsession! :-)
