Hi All,
I have a pretty decent handle on what Hollies footage is out there and the source of when/where it was filmed. However, the source of one tiny fragment has continued to elude me. For anyone who has seen or has a copy of a 1985 music doc titled 'British Rock: The First Wave', narrated by actor Michael York, it contains this very piece. It was certainly released officially Down Under on VHS in the late 1980s I think - my copy is somewhere amongst my tape collection...
Within the doco are segments on many of the most important bands of the 'British Invasion' including of course The Hollies who are featured with some excerpts of 'Just One Look' from the 26/4/1964 Wembley NME Pollwinners concert. However, seen in the film's intro and then again later in the film is a very brief, 2 second shot of The Hollies waving to fans on a very windy day as they board a plane (inc Haydock). I'm assuming this has been sourced from a US newsreel or an American TV network's archive, though I can't be sure it's from the US. Their clothes and hair make it more likely to be from their lengthy 1966 trip than in 1965. But that's not 100% confirmed.
Someone has put up this doc in many parts and though Apple has seemingly blocked one part due to copyright infringements, the relevant Hollies brief moment - at 2 seconds, is very brief! - is seen in this link from 1.24-1.26.
If anyone has seen this footage in its original source/edit or has suggestions based on the plane in the background, I'd be keen to hear your thoughts.
And yes, this is the level of detail in which I frequently find myself mired! In the 25+ years I've been aware of this footage, I've not come across from where it derives. British Movietone and British Pathe have their collections digitised and viewable online and I've not come across it on their sites. Hence thinking this is from the USA.
I think this footage has always stayed in the back of my mind because The Hollies so rarely made national newsreels - never AFAIK except for possibly this one. Unless it was The Beatles or Stones, most bands waving goodbye to fans were rarely the subject of the national newsreel cameras, or if they were filmed, were generally not included in the final edits.
Happy "blink and you'll miss it" viewing!
cheers
Simon
PS - Baz, great to have you back on the site sir!
