Inspired by the many discussions on the individual merits of the band’s first two lead singers Allan Clarke and Mikael Rickfors, I have complied 5 playlists that mix tracks with Clarke on lead vocals with tracks with Rickfors on lead vocals. All the songs were recorded during 1970-1974.
IMHO, I think the playlists make for a very satisfying listening experience and they demonstrate the high quality of the band’s recordings in this period. I believe these playlists also indicate that the band would have been well served by having these two musicians in the band at the same time and by giving more lead vocal opportunities to Terry Sylvester on the band’s recordings. These steps may have assisted Allan in saving his voice in the longer term.
I know that beauty is in “the eye of the beholder” and that therefore many on this forum may not like my selections and sequencing. That’s fine. However, the following playlists confirmed to me (if this was needed) that The Hollies were a great band in the early seventies. Enjoy the 5 “new albums”!
