This is a song that I rarely hear as it is tucked away on an album I rarely listen to but whenever I do hear it I like it. Thinking about the song yesterday once again I think it has "something" and maybe could have been a single. Perhaps Wicked Lester (the future Kiss) heard this in it to and that's why they recorded it. Like a few tracks on the album it sounds a bit sparse though and probably needed a bit of a rethink to become a symbol, I'm also not made on the instrumental interlude which is a bit playful.
This song was actually recorded in November 1969, very close to the Sing Hollies sessions and I think that playful organ solo belongs more to that sound. I always feel Sing Hollies harks back to earlier in the '60s for its production and is a bit childish to my ears. I Wanna Shout seems to straddle the Sing Hollies sound and the "Confessions" sound. Interesting to see that this is a '60s song and and not a '70s song after all. Confessions wasn't released until November 1970, a full year later so that puts a certain spin on things. Unusually the band released no single between Gasoline Alley in September 1970 and Hey Willy in May 1971. A re-jigged I Wanna Shout could have made for a single in early 1971 but as it was over a year old at that stage I'm sure it was well forgotten.
The song is one of several written by Clarke/Sylvester on the album, a partnership that seemed to go on hiatus until Hollies (1974) and is sung in duet, not unlike the near contemporary single Gasoline Alley Bred. I always thought the lyric, "I've got something, you've got nothing, a child, a home of my own" is a very specific one for the band, I wonder if it references an actual romantic entanglement one of them were in? You can also really easily read a 2nd meaning into the lyrics especially as it is sung in duet by two men, I'm sure it is unintentional though!
Are there any contemporary articles or interview where the band talk about this song or give any details? I may have seen one on another forum but will have to dig around to find something. Any more information or thoughts on this song?
