I seem to recall hearing or seeing somewhere that in the 90's when the 30th Anniversary 3 CD set was issued that Capitol/whoever in the US were actually seriously thinking about reissuing all the Hollies albums mono/stereo with bonus tracks and a remixed Evolution. Maybe this was something Ron Furmanek was involved with. Obviously these never eventuated. Has Anyone heard about these and if Evolution was remixed have you ever heard it?

I have read somewhere (probably on here !) that Ron did some 'new' stereo mixes to 'modernise' the sound of some classic sixties tracks - apparently Nash loved it & was all for it....but messers Clarke, Hicks, & Elliott - showing famed 'Hollie conservatism' - were initially rather 'cool' to it & then totally against it...
eventually the same old primitive (& cheap !) stereo mix of;'vocals ( plus the odd lone instrument)on one channel / instruments on the other' stereo mixes were used AGAIN....
Ron was understandably somewhat upset & 'miffed' all his hard work to improve the stereo sound in the mix of the original recorded performance(s) (only !) had been very quickly dismissed & unappreciated by all concerned except Graham Nash...who admitted to Ron that was really a major part of why he'd left the group in late 1968 !
I've never heard of any of Ron's apparently quite fascinating more modern stereo mixes being issued, or even circulating in bootleg form, but going by his (largely) unappreciated decent stereo mixes on that '30th Anniversary' CD set they would be VERY worthwhile a listen...

It was the "King Midas In Reverse" stereo remix that was the biggest disappointment when it was announced that it would be pulled. Nash absolutely LOVED it. It "brought the song to life" as someone said. Ron synced the two four track tapes that it was recorded on - which surprised me, I wouldn't have thought that EMI would have recorded in this way as it was unreliable (thinking here of "Only A Northern Song" by the Beatles that was recorded in this way, and they couldn't get the tapes to re-sync to make a stereo mix) but it seems that Ron Richards must have had faith in the technique. Perhaps the awkwardness of syncing the tapes is the reason why that naff stereo mix is used again and again; even Ron Furmanek remarked at how awkward it was to sync them in the 1990's! But anyway, eight tracks on the master meant he had a lot to play with, and apparently the orchestra swirls about in the stereo mix and the harmonies are spread nicely over the channels - I'm dying to hear this! It has been bootlegged privately once that I'm aware of but I missed out on grabbing it as the download link expired. Someone on the old Elevated Observations had it.
In regards to the original question, I was not aware of such a reissue project. I've heard rumours that there *might* be one being discussed now, headed by Nash and Clarke, which might see us Hollies fans given what we want finally! But don't hold your breath!
It would be nice to get a remix of "Evolution". However you listen to it - in stereo or mono - sonically it's muddy. I believe that it was actually mixed to stereo and folded down with a bit of tweaking. If you fold the stereo mix, it sounds pretty much identical. Just like "Hollies Sing Dylan" does. This made things much easier for EMI and at that time they were experimenting with speeding up the mixing process in the studio.
