Ah, so this is where you all got to... Today I received a perfect quality DVD of the complete episode of 'This Is Tom Jones' that was originally broadcast on 13th November 1969. The Hollies perform HAH (nothing new, though I haven't seen it look quite this good before), but also later in the show Tom Jones join The Hollies for a performance of 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy'! Allan & Tom trade lines and then sing in unison, and are backed by the rest of The Hollies plus an orchestra (the rest of the band are in silhouette but Terry's & Tony's distinct harmonies are clearly audible). I would upload this to YouTube, but I no longer have an account. However I have it if anyone wants to trade: peterchecksfield@gmail.com Incidentally, this (& several other episodes) were rebroadcast on Austrian TV a few weeks back, so that's where my DVD is sourced from. All dialogue is dubbed in German, but fortunately the songs are not!

I forgot to mention: there is also around 30 seconds of chat between Tom and the whole group prior to 'He Ain't Heavy', though unfortunately this IS dubbed in German!

Wow Peter. That is BIG news as far as rare Hollies footage is confirmed. I've seen a photo but never the actual vision of The Hollies and Tom Jones singing together. This is a major footage discovery and highlight! Many thanks for alerting all to this info.

Glad to see you on here Peter C !
Great find of Tom & The Hollies too, I recall Tom Jones often did a number with whoever his guests were, including groups
- I can remember Tom similarly joining The Moody Blues for a song, it was normally something like a Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Elvis, or Ray Charles song (maybe 'What'd I Say' etc) etc, that is a Rock 'n' Roll or R' n' B standard...so them doing 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy' here is per normal.
Tom did a duet with Jerry Lee Lewis once too on his show, Jerry at the piano singing a bit, then Tom, & then they sang together as Tom does with Clarkey.

I'm sure Peter of all people has that JLL clip! And don't forget this one. I've also seen a cool one with the Rascals, doing "Midnight Hour."

The above is a quick montage of screen grabs that I just put together (2 images from the short interview + 2 from the duet). Click on it to enlarge.

Welcome back Peter, I have been wondering where you've been! What an amazing find, I hope this sees the light of day somehow so we can all see it. I reckon that the BBC sold the 'This Is Tom Jones' show to Australia at the time, hence why this clip survives. Odd that it survives in colour, most were black and white when copied to broadcast abroad. I hope that 'Hollies In Concert' will show up in colour one day too.

One thing I'm after is a UK TV (1980?) performance of 'Soldier's Song'. I know this circulates (albeit not in great quality), & I will gladly trade the 'This Is Tom Jones' appearance for it. Anyone?

I don't have it but I remember watching it & I'm pretty certain it's from a ITV (Thames TV) 'Kenny Everett Show' or maybe titled: 'The Kenny Everett Video Show'
Pearson own Thames TV I think so you could check there.
The Hollies did a performance of 'Soldier's Song' (no one playing anything instrument wise for most of the song, but Bobby using little 'finger cymbals' at the start) they also did a performance of 'Peggy Sue' (not the 'Heartbeat' Polydor single from the 'Buddy Holly' album) which was the track then getting all the UK Radio airplay ! (typical latter day mis-calculation of choice of Hollies single....)
If you check with Pearson re those ITV 'Kenny Everett Show' circa 1980 you might track these two 'forgotten' Hollies colour song performances down
Good Luck !

Are you certain they appeared on this show? I can't find any mention of the band on any of 'The Kenny Everett Video Show' databases such as the one below (usually reliable), and anyway artists usually only performed one song on the show... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Kenny_Everett_Video_ShowI do know the band appeared on at least two other UK TV shows during 1980, perhaps someone can confirm which songs they performed: (a) 'Friday Night, Saturday Morning', 10th October 1980 (BBC2) (b) 'Stardust', 22nd October 1980 (ITV) ... Anyway, back to trading for 'This Is Tom Jones'! I don't want anything especially rare, basically anything I don't already have from the 1963 - 1999 era! So... anyone? We could even exchange the mpeg (or VOB) files via "You Send It" or a similar file-sharing service, that way I can send it anywhere in the world within a hour or so. peterchecksfield@gmail.com

Odd that it survives in colour, most were black and white when copied to broadcast abroad. I hope that 'Hollies In Concert' will show up in colour one day too. Often there were two different versions filmed, at least early during the show's run: a black & white version for "PAL" countries (UK, Europe, Australia), and a colour version for "NTSC" countries (USA, Canada). Generally the NTSC versions seems to survive or at least circulate more (a couple of people mentioned Jerry Lee Lewis' appearance on the show: I've had the US version on video since 1982 but I still have the UK version as just an audio!). Here's a great comparison between UK / Australian and US / Canadian performances of a song:

This is one of those rare BBC TV performances that actually does survive in BBC archives! This performance was the first time The Hollies had been on any BBC TV show to promote new material for SIX LONG YEARS, according to BBC paperwork. Previous program on BBC TV had been on 'They Sold A Million', TX 2 June 1974, where The Hollies performed He Ain't Heavy and Air That I Breathe, the former backed with a 28 piece orchestra. And yes, this 1974 episode no longer survives at the BBC...of course. Don't have any info at present for the 'Stardust' appearance beyond the date, which you have already.

Maybe The Hollies were on the later BBC Kenny Everett Show ? (which I know began a bit later)
I AM certain I saw them do 'Soldier's Song' (I recall Bobby had those little 'finger cymbols' at the start & with no one playing any instruments in the main) & 'Peggy Sue' in colour on a show which I feel sure was a Kenny Everett show - I was at my sister's on a monday night thus unable to record it (Kenny Everett's ITV show was on Monday evenings then)
sometimes bands/artists DID do two songs on Kenny's show.... - The Moody Blues for example did 'Steppin' in A Slide Zone' & 'Had To Fall in Love With You' from their 1978 'Octave' album,' on Kenny's show but as a four piece minus the recently departed Mike Pinder (who was nevertheless playing keyboards on the recording they were miming to...!) and pre- Patrick Moraz taking over as their keyboardist (something they now try to 'down play' totally !)
I think it's 'Freemantle' who hold the rights to Kenny Everett's ITV shows now...

Thanks Simon. I wonder if "Stardust" is actually the show Gee saw, or does anyone else remember them appearing on "The Kenny Everett Video Show"?

Thanks... and you're right regarding 2 songs (albeit only occasionally), As I have David Essex performing both "Imperial Wizard" and "20 Flights Up" on the 19th February 1979 edition. I've still drawn a blank so far in even finding a date for The Hollies' appearance... if I can find that I may be able to locate it as I know someone who has many complete episodes (it's a waste of time me trying "official" sources as they're not going to give me a copy in a trade!).

well if 'Stardust' went out on Monday nights it could be....
I checked through old back early issues of 'Carousel' fanzine to see if maybe the Late Alan Pooley might have mentioned anything...
Nothing in 'Carousel' as such, but I found included among my old 'Hollies papers' a photocopy of a list in rather hard to read handwriting by someone of Hollies video clips numbered from 1 to 27
most are well known but:
No.25 - 'Soldier's Song' - source: "Song haben wir von (or ron) Bobby Elliott" - Schlechte Qualitat"
not sure what that means (!) looks like German I'm not sure I have spelt it right as the photocopy is a bit faded
hope this helps !
with: Just One Look (TOTP 1964), Bus Stop ('recovered' TOTP 1966 with Allan Clarke on acoustic & Eric Haydock on Bass !), Blowin' In The Wind' ('Bobbie Gentry Show', colour 1968), Sorry Suzanne (TOTP, 1969) He Ain't Heavy... (Pop Go The Sixties, colour 1969), Gasoline Alley Bred (TOTP colour 1970), Curly Billy (TOTP, colour 1973) plus 'Golders Green Concert' (1969 b/w) and 'Heartbeat' & 'That'll Be The Day' ('Friday Night...Saturday Morning', 1980), 'This is it' (Wogan, 1987) plus the 1988 TOTP perfomanc(es) of 'He Ain't Heavy..'
- that's about eleven or so songs performances & a complete concert show (at least) that we know survives that could form a; 'Hollies on the BBC' DVD IF the BBC have access to it all & were remotely interested (which I suspect they are not...)

There's other BBC material surviving, including 'Blue Peter' 1970 (Tony Hicks playing guitar) and TOTP '81 (reunion with Graham & Eric!). There was a 'Nationwide' feature in late 1981 or early 1982 featuring them recording 'Take My Love And Run', and what about their appearance on 'The Russell Harty Show' in 1982, was that BBC or ITV (I know that Harty had shows on both channels). Of course some surviving BBC items don't actually exist in their archives (TOTP performances of 'Hey Willy' and 'The Air That I Breathe'), something that probably applies to the TOTP performance of 'Bus Stop' too. The 'Bobby Gentry Show' also featured 'Stewball' and (with BG) 'Louisiana Man'.

Thanks Peter! All I understood was the apparent punchline, "Engelbert Humperdinck."

to the re-translation from German: at first they're givin compliments to Tom (he obviously sang before the clip starts). Then he announces the Hollies and asks them where the groups name comes from (the famous always asked question). They reply, that they originally wanted another name for the group, but that one would have been taken away by someone else: the name "Engelbert Humperdinck". Tom Jones adds: Oh thats funny, I also thought about taking this name.... A nice way of kidding about the chart topping "schmaltzy" big entertainer and singer - perhaps even Tom Jones sometimes could have been envious of him..
